Chapter 11

“Who said there could be cameras here?” I nearly screeched. I hate that sound in my voice. It means I’m expending too much energy on things out of my control.

Liz pulled me aside. “This was my idea. If the judge can see the ritual and the results you get, she might sort out the cop-killer case.”

“Dammit, you should have told me.” I hate surprises. I mean really hated them. It’s all about control, I know. “I need to be ready for stuff like this.”

“Simmer down, Dani. All you’re going to do is your usual thing. There is simply one extra person with a camera.”

“And a light system to rival Isotopes stadium.” That’s our resident minor league baseball team. Popcorn and beer anyone?

“It’s not that bad.” She gave an exasperated sigh. “If the lighting isn’t right, we won’t have the best images for the judge.”

I could see her point. I just didn’t like it. “Okay, but if he gets in my way, I’m not going to be held responsible for anything that happens to him.”

“Agreed.”

Sam approached after Liz returned to the camera guy.

“I know you’re not okay with this, but try to settle yourself, focus on what’s in front of you.”

“You’re in front of me.” It was a small attempt at a joke, and Sam did smile.

“The case, babe, the case.” A quick surge of emotional energy pulsed from him to me.

“Okay. Okay.” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. There are times when I feel silly doing the things I do in front of others. It’s kind of like having an orgasm with an audience. I was just waiting for the judges to flash scorecards.

So I stood with Sam shielding me while I prepared myself, which I knew was his intention. Ever the protector. He had such strength and I wanted to know where it had come from. But not now.

My ritual items had already been prepared and were lying on a red silk scarf beside the recently thawed corpse of Edna Dover. Liz, the camera guy, Stan, Mr. Dover and Vernon waited in a corner of the room. All were silent and anticipation hung heavy in the room. The only thing not ready at the moment was me.

So I focused on the crystal amulet hanging around my neck and took in three or four deep breaths. My eyes opened halfway and I gazed at, but didn’t focus upon, Sam’s chest. The power in me simmered and then sparked through my veins. It permeated every molecule in my body and electrified my blood. Although my blood was already a living organism within me, now it became almost sentient.

Noise in the room fell silent, or the bubble of protection I created around myself pushed everything except the necessary elements away. After a nod from me, Sam moved away. I was ready.

Generally, I wear jeans, boots, a T-shirt and a blazer. For tonight I had felt a need for a ritual outfit more congruous with ceremony. So I had chosen a red kimono-style silk jacket.
